October Charitable Events: Taste of the NFL & Can Drive

As we cozy up for the fall, enjoy lush harvests, and ready ourselves for the holiday seasons ahead, it’s a good time to remember those in challenging situations and open our hearts to share the bounty.

In that spirit AVA Restaurant and Wine Bar is participating in two charitable giving programs during the month of October.

Taste of the NFL

Anyone who knows me knows that my sports acumen isn’t the greatest — I hardly know a pigskin from a fastball and my March Madness brackets would be more successful if I threw darts at the rosters while blindfolded.

Still, there are sports lovers among my family, friends, and business associates, and that’s how I found out about the Taste of the NFL, a program by the National Football League to help combat hunger in America.

Celebrating its 25th year this year, the program includes a wine component that I thought would work well for AVA. (You can read more about the entire program here.)

As a partner this year, here’s what we’re doing at AVA:

During the whole month of October, any time we sell one of the five bottles of wines in the Gallo family of brands listed below, a meal is donated to Feeding America by the Taste of the NFL. Gallo has been a partner in the Taste of the NFL program for 21 years!

What’s great about this is that real local impacts are made in partnership with a larger, national organization. Our sales of these bottles will benefit the closest Feeding America location, which is in Washington D.C., and through partnerships with local food banks, that money trickles back to our communities.

The wine bottle sales that will go to the FEED program are:

Now, just in case you’re wondering what this means for the AVA dining room, rest assured that however excited I am about this Taste of the NFL-Gallo Wines-Feeding America fundraiser, we won’t be installing a giant screen TV anytime soon. And we’ll never be the place for Buffalo wings and Super Bowl parties.

But that doesn’t mean we can’t help score a touchdown when we can and this seemed like a great fit for AVA.

Blue Ridge Area Food Bank

But in addition to this program, we’ll be holding a canned food drive for the month of October as well. At the end of the month we will donate all we’ve collected to the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank.

So next time you’re coming in for appetizers, dinner, wine, or tea please bring in cans and other non-perishable food items to add to the food bank. We’re happy to get them to the food bank for you!
